I was not very athletic growing up but lucky enough to come from a large family, living in big houses and so, playing “kids’ thing”, going up trees, jumping on wall ledges, jumping rope, etc.
It was not until my mid 30’s that I got into , first running, and then, a year later, triathlon.
I had not swum in twenty years and most people thought I was going to “kill myself”… I chose not to argue about it, just trained, day after day, until I did my first triathlon, and, surprise, placed first in my age group (30-34). Thirty years later, just 3 years ago, I ran a 10 miler in NC and, again, placed first in my age group, 60-64.
Whatever your background,it should not stop you from starting a fitness program or participating in sports, races, for fun or even if you want to take it to the next level, competition.
If people don’t believe in you, it is your job to prove them wrong, not because you want to impress them, rather because you want it for yourself. It is not about them, it is about you. So please don’t tell yourself it is not in your genes, you are too old to get started or, worse, you don’t have time…We are all capable of amazing things if we just stop that voice in our heads that says “no”home1
